This past weekend was the summer kick-off for our Workshops up at K1's cottage...
As a bonus for those that attended this weekend, we went to the Minden Wildwater Preserve to photograph the Canadian athletes compete in an effort to seize a spot on the National Team. Canadian National Team Trials were taking place last Saturday and Sunday on the 2016 PanAm course on the Gull River in Minden, Ontario.
The trials were being used to select teams for five World Cups, World Championships, the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games and Pan American Continental Championships.
The top athlete in each discipline will represent Canada at the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games on July 18 and 19 at the very same venue being used for the trials this weekend.
The top athlete still needs to achieve a performance standard to be selected. The Pan American Continental Championships will take place on the same date as the Pan American Games and an additional two athletes may be selected to race in July in an effort to earn quota spots for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
Also in attendance this past weekend were members of Team USA and a few members of Team Argentina.
In this photo the two men are focused on the next gate that they must go below and come back upstream through before proceeding back down the course.
When photographing action like this it is always best to get as low to the water as possible in order to capture the intensity of the faces and capture all the action.
My camera settings on this photo were as follows:
Nikon D3 was the camera, Sigma 120-300mm f2.8 sport was the lens
Aperture was f6.3, Shutter speed was 1/1600th of a second, ISO was 640, EV compensation was +.7 to make sure i kept some detail on their faces and could bring up the shadows in photoshop.
